Conventional imaging typically combines a broad-spectrum illumination source with a sensor designed to capture a wide band of reflected light. The resulting frame mainly represents the visible appearance of tissue.

Multispectral imaging (MSI) takes a different approach. It uses spectrally separated illumination channels to interrogate tissue across different regions of the optical spectrum, together with sensors that have appropriate spectral sensitivity.

From broadband imaging to spectrally controlled imaging

A defining characteristic of MSI is independent control of individual spectral channels. Each channel can be selectively activated, adjusted, or combined so the system acquires information from different parts of the spectrum.

Those spectral measurements can then be processed and combined to reveal differences that may not be apparent in conventional broadband imaging.

The core distinction

Conventional imaging: broad-spectrum illumination → broadband detection → image of appearance.

Multispectral imaging: spectrally separated illumination → independently controlled channels → spectrally responsive detection → multiple spectral measurements → additional optical information.

What makes MSI different?

Spectral separation

Different portions of the optical spectrum are deliberately selected for imaging.

Independent control

Individual spectral illumination channels can be controlled according to the imaging objective.

Spectrally appropriate detection

Sensors are chosen for their ability to detect the relevant portions of the spectrum.

Together, these capabilities allow an imaging system to move beyond reproducing appearance and begin extracting additional information from how tissue interacts with light.
